Student Procedures
Student Registration
The first step for a student is to register with X-StreamPublishing. To register, select the "Sign In" button at the bottom of the "Sitemap" display. You will then see the display shown below. Select the "Sign In" button below the "Students" label and proceed to the "Terms and Conditions for Use of this Website". Please read this information and select "Agree" at the bottom of the page (not shown here).
After agreeing to the "terms of use", you will be presented with the following registration form. Complete the registration information on the form and select the "Submit" button. You are then automatically registered as a student and can sign in to the website as a "Returning User" on the home page.
Student Sign In
When you register you select a password that is now used to sign in as a "Returning User". If you forget your password, the "Forgot Password?" link provides a means to request a new password. This option requires that you answer a unique question that you specified during registration. If you answer correctly, a new password is sent to your registration email address.
Student Menu
After signing in you will see the main menu page for students. This page is the starting point for all of the functions that are available to a student. In our "typical scenario" we will begin by choosing the "Select Course" option.
Select Course
On this page the student begins by selecting the state where the school is located, and then, sequentially selecting the fields for the institution, educator, and course. If a course also has a lab, the lab schedule will also be displayed. Each of these fields is a dropdown list of options. The information in the options is provided by the educator prior to the student selections.
After selecting the course, the student selects the "Submit This Form" button and is displayed a list of the segments required for this course.
List of Segments for Course
This page lists the segments that are required for the student's course. The list identifies those segments that are provided free and those that must be purchased. The student then selects the "Review Order" button and proceeds to the next page that displays a summary of the cost of the required segments.
Purchase Credits
Segments that must be purchased are downloaded by the student using "credits". After selecting the "Purchase Credits" button on the "Student Menu" page, the student is provided the display shown below. This form provides a secure online connection where credits may be purchased using a credit card. Once credits are purchased, they are stored in the X-StreamPublishing database for use by the student.
Download Segment
After a student has purchased credits, he/she may download a segment. To display the list of segments that are required for the course, select the "List Segments" link (for that course) on the "Student Menu" page.
For our example Chemistry 1A course, the list of segments is shown below. The student selects segments from this list to download. As an example, if the student is required to read and submit segment results for "Experiment 7-N - Archimedes: The Art of Logical Analysis", the student selects the link for "Experiment 7-N".
The student is then presented with a summary of the number of credits in his/her account and prompted to continue with the download of the segment. This display also describes the details of the "Special Offer" for this work and provides a link, labeled "Accept Special Offer", to take advantage of the offer.
Segment Display
Segments are implemented in the Adobe format called "PDF" and must be displayed using PDF reader program. Most web browsers include a PDF reader that is compatible with the segment downloads. If you do not have a PDF reader, you can download the free program by clicking on the "Click Here to Download Adobe Reader" link at the top of the student menu page.
The following display shows the top portion of the downloaded Archimedes segment.
Submit Experimental Results
Many of the required segments provide the capability for online submission of segment results. The following is an example of how segment results can be entered in fields that are provided in the downloaded segment. After filling in the segment fields, the student selects the "Submit" button at the bottom of the segment display. Following this a caution notice is displayed to the student. The student can then select "Grade Result and the student's segment results are submitted for automatic grading.
The following display shows an example of a field where a student enters segment results.
After all of the segment fields have been completed, the student selects the "Submit" button.
After selecting the "Submit" button, the following warning is provided to the student. The student then selects "Grade Results" to proceed with grading. The student's results are graded immediately and the student and educator are automatically sent an email with the grade for that segment.
Manage Student Account
A student can change his/her email address, password, or title by selecting the "Manage My Personal Information" option on the student menu page.
The student can also view his/her account activity, including the number of credits available and if any "Special Offer" downloads have been purchased, by selecting the selecting the "Display My Account Activity" option on the student menu page.
